California Central Valley Spelling Bee

Even during the COVID-19, we are committed to keeping the Spelling Bee tradition alive in our community! Now, more than ever, children need to build confidence in listening, reading, speaking and writing. Participation in the spelling bee helps children develop that confidence.

The Sacramento Bee is proud to offer over 500,000 students in 13 counties an opportunity to participate in the California Central Valley Spelling Bee. The champion (one student) will represent our region and compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The spelling bee is open to students in grades K-8 who attend school in Colusa, El Dorado, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, Shasta, Solano, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo and Yuba counties.

Once you enroll in the Scripps National Spelling Bee you are automatically enrolled in the California Central Valley Spelling Bee. A spelling bee coordinator (usually a teacher, parent or community volunteer) at your school has the very important job of finding the school’s top speller. Many schools conduct their own school-wide spelling bees. This year, due to the pandemic, the Scripps National Spelling Bee will be implementing some new online tools for schools to use. Schools will have access to an online test tool that will enable them to administer a classroom and/or school spelling test remotely. Schools may use this tool to narrow the field of competitors in their school spelldown or they may elect to use an online test in place of oral competition.

The school champion (one student) from each school will advance to the next level of testing. This year due to the uncertainty of pandemic and accordance with the local public health guidelines, the California Central Valley Spelling Bee will implement testing using the Scripps National Spelling Bee's new online tools to determine our final winner. This final online bee is currently slated to take place on March 9, 2021; however this date may change and we will keep you posted.

The winner (one student) from our final spelling bee will represent the California Central Valley region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The national spelling bee is an event that takes almost an entire week in late May/early June. As well, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is also monitoring the health guidelines for this event.

There is an enrollment fee for each school. Your school will receive study words for students, pronouncer guides, rules, certificates and more. Click here to learn more from the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

NOTES:

  • The California Central Valley Spelling Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee have no authority over the conduct or outcomes of local class, school or district spelling bee programs (spelling bees other than the annual California Central Valley Spelling Bee and the Scripps National Spelling Bee). The regional and national offices will not render judgments relating to the conduct or outcome of local level spelling bees. We suggest that coordinators, teachers, administrators and parents read and fully understand the local class, school or district rules as the decisions of the local officials are final.
  • If you are experiencing any issues with the online testing you are implementing at your school, please contact the Scripps National Spelling Bee as they are administering the testing platform.
